This is a little shout out to those of you who, like me, live in Chicago. If you went looking for the “So You Think You Can Dance” finale on Fox, you instead found pre-season football: The Bears vs. Kansas City. Now, if this had been a Cubs game, it would be a different story, but instead we got a game that doesn’t even count. And a reminder from a Fox News correspondent that the So You Think You Can Dance finale would be on at a “special” time. I would have appreciated it if she’d just said “inconvenient.”
I decided waiting to watch it at 11 p.m. or recording it and watching it later just wouldn’t work, and so I followed along with the live blog of Cristina Kinon of the New York Daily News. Not surprisingly Courtney went first, but I’m still shocked that Katee went next. She was my favorite of the season: I loved her unique, funky movements. There’s not a number she did that went wrong, and in almost all of them, she was crazy memorable. At least she got $50,000 for being the first place girl.
So Joshua wins and gets the prize, the title and a part in “Step Up: 3D.” (Is that the booby prize?) Joshua wasn’t as flawless and flashy as Katee or as entertaining as Twitch, but in terms of an all-around talented dancer, you couldn’t ask for more. He never exactly stood out, but he was good at everything and made it look easy. Even taking flight with those ridiculously high leaps seemed a breeze. While I wanted Katee to win, Joshua was my second choice, and in personality, he seemed sweet, humble, smart and truly thrilled to be on the show. So while I (and and the rest of the Chicago area) missed the live finale, at least we didn’t have to sit through the Jonas Brothers.
Best performances of the season:
Katee and Joshua doing Bollywood
Mark and Chelsie playing lovers who are losing touch
Twitch and Katee with Katee as the angry girlfriend trying to get in the door
Courtney and Mark doing a goth jazz number choreographed by Sonya Teyah
Chelsie and Twitch playing battling conductors
Comfort and Mark as two school kids
Joshua and Katee doing a Mia Michaels contemporary routine all in black.
